Established in 1964 as an organization to carry out the social ministry of the Archdiocese of Kottayam, Kottayam Social Service Society has come a long way in the fifty years of its existence and has succeeded in establishing its identity as an organization of excellence in the field of social work. This has been made possible by the relentless effort of its leaders, staff and every individual SHG member who has been a part of this organisation.


Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS) is a registered charitable organization (Reg. K-15/1964) under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies’ Registration Act XII of 1955. The activities of KSSS are spread mainly in the five districts of Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta covering 80 rural villages (57 Panchayaths) in Kerala. The main focus of the organization is the empowerment and improvement in the quality of the poor and other vulnerable sections in society like women, widows, elder persons, disabled, rural children and farmers through the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The Thematic areas of Intervention of KSSS include Human & Institutional Development; Gender and Development; Community Health Programmes; Natural Resource Management; Entrepreneurship Development Programme & Rural Marketing; Community Based Rehabilitation of Differently-abled; Child and Youth Development; Savings and Micro credit and Action Research & Documentation.


KSSS has more than 50 years experience extending dedicated services in the development sector and has invaluable expertise in facilitating capacity building, community health, promotion of grassroots level organizations, watershed development and other community level organizations for social change and transformation. KSSS has the credit of contributing several Women Empowerment Models to society. More than 56000 families are directly linked with the organization through the network of community based organizations.
