Basic Amenities Development Programme

Basic amenities are essential foundation for a decent living and it enhances economic growth and quality of life. The scope of basic amenities include safe drinking water, sanitation, housing, all weather road to village, electrification, fuel, connectivity, healthcare centre, school, playground and recreational facilities and many more.

Basic amenities are meant to make life easier for an individual but still there are many villages and hamlets where basic amenities are still a day dream.

Major Activities

JANAKIYA PARPIDA PATHATHI

As part of basic needs to the vulnerable section of the society, KSSS constructed 79 eco-friendly houses ie, one in each village under the operational areas of KSSS. The distribution of keys was made in a public function conducted at the Central Office at Thellakom.

CENTENARY HOUSING PROGRAMMES

As part of the Centenary House Construction Scheme 74 families got new houses. The House constructions were completed with community support received as ‘shramadhanam’ (voluntary work) from local SHG members. The financial support for the House construction was released in three stages as per the progress of the House construction. The respective Village Development Committee coordinated the community labour and monitoring of the house construction which were of low-cost and in an eco-friendly fashion.

Trainings were arranged at the central level and it was mandatory that two of the responsible family members participate in it.

HOUSE RENOVATION PROGRAMMES

As part of the Centenary Housing Programmes, KSSS involved in the repairing tumbledown houses and also focused on the improvement of water and sanitation facilities through construction of drainage systems, and provision of hygiene education to the deserving SHG members.

The aid for these two programmes of construction and renovation was procured from the Village Development Committee fund raised through sale of Karshikamela Coupons. The desired members have to forward the application request during the Village Development Committee meeting. Committee members select the applicant depending upon the underlying norms.

Accessible Toilets for the differently-abled

The need of the hour is to break down the architectural barriers and let open our hearts to those who need special care and attention. We need to create a barrier-free environment so that they do not feel intimidated owing to their mobility restrictions. KSSS selected and assembled a meeting of representatives from groups for differently-abled in KSSS’ Operational area. Smt. Anns Varghese (President, Athirampuzha Grama Panchayath) inaugurated the programme. Shri. Prasanth Kumar (Sub-Inspector Ettumanoor Police Station); Fr. Sunil Perumanoor (Executive Secretary, KSSS); Smt. Babitha T. Jessil (Programme Officer, KSSS); Smt. Mary Philip (CBR Coordinator, KSSS), and Shri. Philip Chacko delivered message on that occasion. The distribution of financial assistance to the most deserving families for constructing 10 accessible bathrooms for differently-abled people as models in community was done amidst the programme. The financial assistance for the social venture was made available by Chittilappilly Foundation Group.

Other Activities KSSS SHGs

  1. Memury Male SHG donated Rs. 10, 000 for house construction.
  2. Arnoottimangalam (Male SHG) Financial aid of Rs. 20, 0000 to cancer patient, house renovation
  3. Karimkunnam Grama Vikasana Samithi sponsored Rs. 15000 for the renovation of the house of an SHG.

Houses for Landless

As part of the Basic Amenities Development Programme implemented at Karimkunnam by KSSS under the aegis of the Kottayam Archdiocese, houses were constructed under the Land to Landless programme. The foundation stones were laid by Mar Mathew Moolakkatt (Archbishop of Kottayam). Four houses were constructed on the land sponsored by Rev. Fr. Jacob Kallapurakkal. Houses were constructed for four deserving families from Manjoor village in Kottayam district, Alecherry village in Kannur district and Karimkunnam and Bisonvalley villages in ldukki District.

Financial Support for Housing

KSSS collaborated with Save A Family Plan India to extend financial aid to the flood victims who lost their houses. Ms. MerlinTomy (Programme Officer), Mrs. Jancy Santhosh (FDP Animator) and Mrs. Rincy Philip (FDP Animator) organized the programme to benefit three most deserving FDP flood affected families. The beneficiaries were provided with an amount of Rs. 12, 00,000/-.

‘ATHIJEEVAN’ – A Basic Facility development Program for flood affected families

KSSS partnered with Caritas India to implement Athijeevan 2019 in its operational areas to ensure Sustainable Rehabilitation of flood affected families. 36 flood affected villages in Idukki, Wayanad and Kottayam districts were the project villages under the programme . The program was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. George Vettickat (Executive Director, KSSF) and Mr.P.U. Thomas (Director, Navajeevan Trust,Kottayam) presided over the meeting held at Chaithanya Pastoral Centre, Thellakom. House maintenance, toilet construction, poultry farming, goat rearing and kitchen gardens were the activities implemented under Athijeevan-2019.

Chaithanya Medows

Kottayam Social Service Society in association with the Kottayam Archdiocese of Kottayam constructed seven houses of the poor people who lost houses due to the flood in 2018.Mr.Philip Elakkattu from the USA sponsored 40 cents of land for constructing the houses. Each person got five cents of land and six lakhs for the construction of houses. The amount for the construction of houses was donated by the St.Marys Church, Chicago. The house blessing ceremony was done by the Archbishop of Kottayam, Mar Mathew Moolakkat. Mr.Thomas Chazhikadan MP,Mons Joseph MLA,Fr.Michael Vettickat (Vicar General, Kottayam Archdiocese),Shri.Saji Thadathil(President, Ettumanoor Block Panchayath ), Fr. Jacob Mavumkal(Executive Director, Kerala Social Service Forum), Fr. Mathews Kattiyankal(Vicar, St.Geroge church, Kaipuzha), Fr. Sunil Perumanoor(Executive Director, KSSS) and Fr. Mathews Valiyaputhenpurayil (Assistant Director, KSSS)were present in the house blessing ceremony.
