KSSS’ Annual SHG Fest & Agricultural Fest was established 18 years (1998) back with limited spectators. Across the years it has expanded to hundreds of stalls and lakhs of visitors. The 18th Karshikamela conducted this year from 18th to 22nd November was organized in collaboration with the State Agricultural Department and All India Radio, Trivandrum. Agricultural fair and SHG meet is an annual whirlwind of food, rides, entertainment, animals, crafts, shopping, contests, and just about everything in between. New Cultural Programme attractions to the fair this year included Stage drama by Cherthala Jubilee Theatres, folk song, V4U Events, D4Dance Mega show, Nashik Dhol (drumming) and tug of war of different eminent teams.
Every day of the fair had a theme to be observed and promoted. The first day of the fair “Sarga Sangamam” was organized to promote the welfare of the differently-abled by extending benefits meant for them and help them lead a comfortable life. The Fest was inaugurated by Mar Mathew Moolakkat (Archbishop Kottayam Diocese and Patron KSSS). The day included seminar on “Mainstreaming of Differently-abled”, agricultural and cultural competitions.
The second day of Karshikamela focused on “Food & Health Security”. The public meet for the day was inaugurated by Shri. K. P. Mohanan (Kerala State Minister for Agriculture in United Democratic Front Cabinet). The competitions held for the day were Nayi Purani, Ummikiri Nirmanam, Vadathil Ottam, Choonda Idiyil and the most attention-grabbing event was Tug-of-War competition for high school girls. The stunning day ended up with “Folksongs Evening” arranged by All India Radio, Trivandrum.
The third day of the fest was observed as “Environment-Friendly Day”. The function began with seminar on “Family Values and Farming Culture”. The competitions for the day were Lungi dance, Wood Cutting, Stone-washing competition and soil-bund making. The Public Meet for the day was inaugurated by Shri. K.C Joseph (Minister for Rural Development, Planning & Culture of the Government of Kerala).
Fourth and Fifth day of the fest were exclusively for SHG members and KSSS farmers meet. The Concluding Ceremony of the Karshikamela of the fest was inaugurated on the last day by Shri. Oomen Chandy (Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala). There was an array of cultural and agricultural programmes and competitions. The fair and exhibition drew the entire farming community to hold discussions for the growth of the agriculture sector.
Food stalls and Amusement park were really fun for family day out. The rides on roller-coasters were breathtaking, while those looking for something more family-friendly had plenty of rides and other attractions to choose from. There were lots for the little ones to enjoy too. Every spectator of the Karshikamela enjoyed the food stall around the corner and the friendly and helpful atmosphere. There were many stalls related to modern agricultural technology in order to make the farmers aware about the new techniques along with the old agricultural techniques and to carry out the farming with modern methods. The people visited each and every stall and were took away information in detail. The stall of organic products, organic fruits, vegetables and crops produced by the SHG members were a center of attraction of the Fair.
The Farm competitions succeeded to bring about a nostalgic feeling in the spectators of the olden days. Colorful cultural programs presented by each region of KSSS were organized on the main stage during the fest. The Fair also attracted a large number of SHG members, farmers, public, school children, college students and professionals.
The Chaithanya Jeevakarunyanidhi coupon which is a project conceived in order to mobilize financial assistance for the benefit of terminally-ill patients and their family members. The lucky dip was drawn on the final day of the Fest to find the winners of the four central level prizes of 1 pavan gold coin (8gms., 22 carat), fridge, tailoring machine and solar lantern.
