The programme started on April 5th at 10.30 am and around 300 children, from the operational areas of KSSS in Ernakulam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha and Idukki districts participated. The camp was inaugurated by Ettumanoor Circle Inspector, Mr. Biju K. Stephen. The main strategy used in the camp was infotainment – a process ensuring fun and learning for children incorporating various types of games, competitions, trainings on Traditional songs etc. A Rally was conducted toCaritasAyurvedaHospitalsubsequent to the flag-hoisting ceremony performed by Msgr. Mathew Ellapanickal and children shouted out various slogans as they marched clinging onto colourful balloons enthusiastically. The Handicraft-making competition was yet another attractive activity in the three-day camp. The camp succeeded to instill new hope and confidence among the children for the approaching academic year.


World Mother’s Day Observations was conducted by KSSS on May 7th for mothers of disabled members of KSSS CBR groups. Smt. Radha V. Nair, the Kottayam District Panchayath President inaugurated the function. The Chief Guest for the function – Deputy Director of Sense International,India, Sri. Biju Mathew delivered the presidential address. A seminar was taken on ‘The Role of Mothers in the Rehabilitation of Disabled Children’ by Smt. Brahadha Shankar, Regional Coordinator, Kerala Sense International,Indiaand a Seminar was taken on ‘Ways to Reduce Psychological Stresses’ by Mrs. Shaila Thomas, Family Counselor. More than a hundred mothers of disabled participated in the programe from various villages of KSSS.


Women from various villages gathered at the central level in Kottayam town under the auspices of Kottayam Social Service Society to proclaim the rights and dignity of Womanhood. A wholesome and spectacular range of activities was staged for the public to realize the importance and contribution of Women to society.

Beginning with a colourfully rally from Mar Alia Cathedral to Thirunnakara maidanam (approx. 1 km.), around 3000 women marched boldly and proudly to display their enthusiasm on this day. Fancy dress competition with more than 200 contestants in single and group items; display of KSSS’ Women Development Initiatives and Regional-wise specific arrangements for making the rally and their participation further attractive along with a set of women participating in Saree wearing competition; all blended well to give the onlookers and public an impression of the glory of feminine existence in society.

The themes reflected in the Fancy dress competition and other messages disseminated by Chief Guest and dignitaries all powerfully conveyed the indispensable role of the feminine gender in the world. Hon’ District Collector – Smt. Mini Antony IAS inaugurated the Closing function meeting at Thirunakkara maidanam and Smt. Radha V. Nair, the District Panchayath President gave the Presidential address. KSSS Media Awards – 2011 were presented to the winners in the different types of media namely print media, radio, TV and photography. (The awards were instituted for honoring the reports, photos, documentaries, commentaries in 2011 that successfully spread a message for the uplift and empowerment of women.) KSSS Women taxi services which was being launched in collaboration with the District Employment Exchange was also inaugurated in the function and outstanding woman- farmer Mrs. Radha Mohanan of Cherpunkal village and winners of other competitions of the day were also honored.

Senior Day

World Elders’ Day is dedicated to remember our elders in society and remind us of the need to take care of them for a sustainable society. On the occasion of World Elders’ Day on 1st October 2011, KSSS organized various events for the Senior SHG members at Chaithanya. The meet was inaugurated by the Hon. Revenue Minister Sri. Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan.

Msgr. Mathew Elappanickal delivered a message on “Elders in Today’s Society” and Fr. Gibil Kuzhivelil took a Class on “Elders in their Family”. The model of 14th Annual Fest Coupon was released amidst the function. Wickerwork competitions were conducted for the Senior Groups, which included broom-making, basketry, bag-making etc. Along with this various cultural, art form competitions, seminars and discussions took place.

‘Grandpa & Grandma’ Reality Show programme for elders was conducted under the leadership of Senior citizens from various regions of KSSS. The main purpose of this program was to provide a platform for Elderly to display their talents. An exciting hunt was conducted among the elders to find the Senior citizen member who had the highest number of children and grandchildren and the winner Mrs. Mariakutty Ittiyaviraye was specially honored.

Ms. Mariakutty John Mekkattil from Areekara village emerged to be the winner in the lucky draw conducted during the day to find out the Luckymost elder among the assembled.


The 7th Annual High Range Agricultural Fest (Swasraya Haritha Mela) was held at KSSS Regional Office, Thadiyampadu on May 21st. Harithamela started with a spectacular rally of the SHG members accompanied with the participation of Shingarimelam troupe and villagers in bright fancy–dresses. Various competitions for different sections like famers, women etc. were conducted in different venues. These included preparing ginger-cultivation plots, juggling, etc.Saleof birds and animals, display and sale of various flowers and vegetables etc. were also arranged in the Mela ground. One of the main attractions of the fair was the distribution of Solar Lamps. The Green Valley Development Society – initiated by the Kottayam Archeparchy to cater services for the holistic development of the High Range region – was inaugurated by Mar Mathew Moolakkatt, Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam. The Smart Group Education Support Scheme for smart group children ofHighRangeregion was also inaugurated in the public meeting by Sri. Roshy Augustine MLA. People from different fields participated in the annual fest.

Hens of different breeds such as Kalinga brown, Gramapriya etc. were distributed at subsidised rates.

Medical camps were also arranged in the farm fest. Doctors fromSt. John’sHospital Eye care, Kattapana andMarGregoriousDentalCollege, Kothamangalam rendered services in Eye camps and dental camps. Around 3500 people participated in the grand fair at Thadiyampadu


World Environment Day – KSSS in collaboration with Kerala Social Service Forum observed World Environment Day on June 4th. Smt. Mini Antony IAS, Hon. District Collector, Kottayam inaugurated the programme. Msgr. General Mathew Elappanickal, gave the presidential speech. A pledge in relation to environment protection was made by the participants. Classes were taken on importance of eco-friendly life, by Dr. D Shine Kumar, PRO of State Animal Husbandry, Those people who participated in the seminar were provided with tree-saplings.

Regional Meets at Kaduthuruthy, Kaipuzha and Malankara to observe World Environment Day


A KSSS Musical Initiative to Love and Respect Nature – which was done in association with Environment campaign received wide acclaim especially from all those who love the environment. The Competition was announced through the monthly Newsletter of KSSS – Sanghachaithanya in the month of May 2011. Competitions were conducted at the Regional level in the month of November and the final round of competitions was conducted during the Karshikamela on 4th December 2011. Overall 530 people from 32 villages showed their participation. The musical instruments used were also eco-friendly.

The support received from the media personnel and the rapport maintained with the government ministries were reflected in the public meetings during the days of the Mela and TV and newspaper reports during the following days. The Fest was distinguished with the presence of seven State Ministers including Central Minister, District Collectors, Honourable Bishops, Cine-artists etc. Thus the 14th Chaithanya Agricultural Fest was successful to attract wide attention and show case the example of a committed development organization thanks to the good team work among its staff and organizers at all levels of the organsisation.
