Today the world respects women and celebrates the successes of women – past and present – in the form of International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day has always been different at different places. KSSS celebrated the day for women at the central level on 8th March 2016 with thousands of women SHG members. Celebrations started with procession to promote awareness and campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, to be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. The SHG members stood and moved region wise with each region conveying a coordinated Women’s Day message for the spectators. The rally which started at Caritas Junction was flagged-off jointly by Kottayam Assistant Superintendent of Police Dr. Karthikeyan Gokul Chandran IPS and Dr. Prameela Devi J. (Member, State Women’s Commission). Subsequently, the SHG members assembled in the auditorium for the public meeting which was inaugurated by Shri. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Minister for Forests, Sports, Cinema, Transport and Environment) in the presence of Mar Mathew Moolakkatt (Metropolitan Archbishop, Kottayam) and other dignitaries. The Keynote message was delivered by Dr. Prameela Devi J.
After the inauguration, amidst the public meeting, financial aid was given under the Asakiranam Cancer Suraksha Programme to Mrs. Ramla Nishi of Samkranthy village who was suffering with cancer, and Trophy for best performance in the day’s Rally was awarded to Kaduthuruthy Region members. After the public meeting, Tug-Of-War competition was conducted between KSSS’ Regional teams comprising women SHG members of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. At the end of a series of thrilling tugs, KSSS’ Kaduthuruthy region team emerged as winners and KSSS’ Malankara region bagged second position.
